Harvard Global Health Catalyst Win-Win Initiative

Introduction: In December 2007, The Win-Win Scientific initiative was proposed by Ahmed Elzawawy as an initiative of ICEDOC’s Experts in Cancer Without Borders http://www.icedoc.org/winwin.htm .It aims at increasing affordability of better value cancer treatment in the world via exploring scientific approaches. All the stakeholders- particularly cancer patients and their families- could win!. This also includes flourishing the business of pharmaceutical companies and Manufacturers of radiotherapy machines and medical devices without ruining a country or individuals economies.

There are 2 mains wings of the win-win initiative:

- The first wing is “Exploring scientific approaches to increase affordability of better value cancer care”.
- The second wing of the win-win initiative, was proposed in November, 2015 and declared in 29 April, 2016 during the Harvard Catalyst Summit. This wing regards catalyst action and professional advice to increase enormously the rate of establishment of services of clinical oncology in the world starting with the most difficult challenges in Africa.

In 29 April, 2016, The Win-Win Initiative has joined Harvard Global Health Catalyst and becomes one of its activities. Hence, the new title of the initiative is:
Harvard Global Health Catalyst Win-Win Initiative

We are professional consultants and we are volunteer catalysts and NOT a funding body. Prof Ahmed Elzawawy, President of AORTIC 2013-2015 talks to ecancertv at AORTIC 2015 , 18-22 November, 2015, Marrakesh, Morocco, about the various ways in which cancer care can be improved in Africa and low and Middle Income countries LMICs.
The fight for better value cancer care is important, he says, but the best long term benefits will be seen from the medical training of many more people.
The huge disparities between the number of clinicians in the developed and developing world are one of the main issues facing Africa, he says.
He notes the importance of online education and skill sharing.
At the same time, Africa and LMICS in the world can still be a place for innovation in cancer care and offers, he argues, a wealth of diversity from which to develop researches that could help in increasing remarkably the affordability of better value cancer care worldwide.
These notions are cited in an open access article in Journal of Global Oncology JGO issued by The ASCO:
Elzawawy AM: Could African and Low- and Middle-Income Countries Contribute Scientifically to Global Cancer Care? JGO – Journal of Global Oncology Volume 1, Issue 2, December 2015 http://jgo.ascopubs.org/content/1/2/49

Prof Ahmed Elzawawy, President of AORTIC 2013-2015 talks to ecancertv at AORTIC 2015, 18-22 November, 2015, Marrakesh, Morocco about the development of a roadmap for cancer control in Africa.
He stresses the importance of a multidisciplinary approach which looks at integrating pathology, palliative care, immunotherapy etc. This is, of course, a huge undertaking which involves the input of many organisations.
He speaks with particular reference to the Lalla Salma Foundation in Morocco which is a good example, he says, of a local foundation with international connections that can help achieve a lot both regionally and internationally.

The new chapter “ Better Value Chemotherapy”appeared in the book “How to get better value cancer care” in 2013. Sir Professor Muir Gray and Prof. David Kerr ,UK, are the Editors. It is published by Offox Press Ltd, Oxford, UK. It is mostly about Industrialized countries particularly USA and Europe with important notes for developing countries and all the world.
We hope that this new book will contribute actively and in a simple explanatory way in changing-for better- concepts, practice, education and researches in medicine and in cancer in the world. It is stated in the book that it adopt the new notions of the third revolution in health that goes with the third revolution in science and industry.

Spreading the Word on the Need for Cancer Control
PACT Partner Publishes New Concept

Contributions to the fight against cancer can come in many shapes and sizes. From donating a radiotherapy machine to spreading the word on the cancer crisis, everything can make a difference. But each contribution can have a greater effect if it is made as part of a larger campaign to confront the cancer crisis. If cancer control stakeholders come together to share ideas and collaborate on the next steps in the fight against cancer, every contribution to fighting cancer will have a huge impact.
One new project that has arisen to bring together cancer control stakeholders to meet the challenge posed by cancer is called the “win-win initiative”. The win-win initiative, which is a part of the International Campaign for Establishment and Development of Oncology Centers (ICEDOC), aims to increase the affordability of cost-effective and economical cancer treatment around the world through the use of scientific approaches. The win-win movement encourages the dissemination of scientific information without patents, to advance cancer research and development and further cancer control efforts and research free of cost.
Recently, the “win-win initiative” began publishing scientific bases that intend to set a framework to facilitate the development of more affordable cancer treatment and generate better value for cancer care. The most recent chapter published is called “Science and Affordability of Cancer Drugs and Radiotherapy in the World — Win-Win Scenarios”. This article, written by an important cancer control advocate and PACT partner, Prof Dr Ahmed Elzawawy, looks into the need to bring down the cost of health treatment and care to levels that are beneficial for everyone, with a specific mention of the growing problem of providing cancer control in low and middle-income countries.
The article can be read online for no charge and a link is provided on this page. Share the article with friends and family and help spread the word on the need to confront the growing cancer crisis.
